Tesla Model Y becomes first EV to top Australian sales charts

Electric vehicle achieves historic milestone as EVs reach nearly half of all new car sales in May.

Tesla Model Y Makes History

The Tesla Model Y has become the first electric vehicle to top Australia's monthly new car sales charts, marking a historic milestone for the local automotive market, according to Drive.

The achievement comes as electric vehicle sales surged to unprecedented levels in May, with EVs reaching nearly half of all new vehicle sales during the month, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Record-Breaking EV Performance

Electric vehicle registrations have more than doubled year-on-year and now account for just under 20 per cent of Australia's new car market, according to data compiled from both the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and the Electric Vehicle Council, as reported by CarsGuide.

The Tesla Model Y's success helped push Tesla up to sixth place in overall brand rankings, tied with June 2023 for its highest placing ever in the top 10, CarExpert reports. This achievement is particularly notable given Tesla offers just two models in the Australian market.

Market Surge Driven by Fuel Costs

The surge in electric vehicle demand has been driven by high fuel prices, with May marking the third consecutive record month for battery-powered vehicle market share, Drive reports.

When combining pure electric vehicles with plug-in hybrids and conventional hybrids, electrified vehicles now represent a significant portion of all new vehicle deliveries, according to CarExpert.

Chinese Brands Gaining Ground

While Tesla achieved the sales milestone, Chinese manufacturers continue expanding their presence in the Australian market. BYD has sold 120,000 vehicles since launching in Australia in 2022 and now operates more than 100 dealerships across the country, with plans to ship 30,000 vehicles to Australia in coming months, ABC News reports.

The company's growth is part of a broader trend of Chinese automotive brands establishing themselves in the Australian market, with new models like the 2026 BYD Sealion 7, Zeekr 7X and Geely EX5 competing against established offerings from Toyota and Volkswagen.

Climate Goals Within Reach

The milestone suggests Australia's climate goals may be more achievable than previously thought, with the rapid adoption of electric vehicles demonstrating their potential to help meet emissions targets, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The sustained growth in EV sales indicates a fundamental shift in Australian consumer preferences, driven by both environmental considerations and economic factors including rising fuel costs.
